Local Government in New Zealand: Challenges & Choices by Jean Drage

$47.99 NZD

Available Stock:
300

Category: Politics | Reading Level: Near Fine

Local government in New Zealand faces major challenges. Among the most pressing are continual legislative change, threats to its autonomy, the gradual erosion of community voices in council planning and decision-making, and the need for funding solutions to ensure property rates remain affordable. As we ll, there is an urgent need for a more coordinated approach across central government on major policy issues such as climate change and housing. This book exposes these challenges and proposes and debates solutions for the future of our local government. Strong local government is vital for ensuring economic growth across and within regions and local communities, for enhancing community wellbeing, for funding and providing the infrastructure needed for, in some cases, rapidly growing and diverse communities, for ensuring our environment is valued and protected, and for planning for development in a time of constraint on resources. This book is a 'one-stop information shop' on local government that can be used by those who regularly interact with or study this area of government, by those working within local authorities, and by those who actively work to ensure their communities grow in a sustainable way. ...Show more

Welcome to Our World? Immigration and the Reshaping of New Zealand by Paul Spoonley & Richard Bedford

$42.99 NZD

Available Stock:

Category: NZ Society

New Zealand is one of the classic immigrant-dependent societies but the nature of migrant flows into the country has changed dramatically since the 1960s. The historic reliance on immigrants from the UK and Ireland was supplemented and then replaced by migrants from elsewhere in the Pacific and then glo bally, especially from Asia. These changes not only altered New Zealand's demography but also the nature of community life and cityscapes, how diversity has been understood and experienced, and the shape of economic participation - or exclusion. Aotearoa New Zealand is now one of the worlds' most super-diverse societies, with all the excitement and the tensions that accompany such population shifts. ...Show more

Along A Fault-Line: New Zealand's Changing Local Government Landscape by Jean Drage et al (eds.)

$39.99 NZD

Available Stock:
300

Category: Politics

Local government in New Zealand is experiencing major upheaval. The creation of an urban unitary council for Auckland, the overthrow of elected representation for the Canterbury region and other instances of intrusion of central government power into local councils (e.g for managing earthquake recovery and the Rugby World Cup) indicate a seismic shift in the foundations of local government in New Zealand. A major review announced in 2011 signals an imminent shakeup of this tier of government. These developments demand robust analysis and innovative responses. This collection addresses fundamental questions about what the appropriate structure and role of local government should be in contemporary New Zealand. Who should decide about the local in our lives? Should Auckland Council be the model for other parts of the country? What is the future for regions? New Zealand’s leading local government scholars provide a context for and tease out the underlying themes that make New Zealand’s local government distinctive. This book will inform decision-makers, scholars and students and those with an interest in the level of government that most directly affects our daily lives. ...Show more

McGhie worked in Samoa earlier - shortly before independence in the 1960s, and later in Papua New Guinea. The author also presents a snapshot of the activities of a Wellington-based foreign service officer during the period he worked closely with the Foreign Minister on the sporting-contact issue in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games in 1990. There is well-documented concern regarding the links between poverty and education; statistics demonstrate, over many decades, that the economically poorer the New Zealand child's family, the more likely it is the child will not reach her/his potential. The blame for such inequitable outcomes is various ly placed on children's families and communities, on teachers and schools, and on wider structural and system injustices. The contributors to this book are key NZ writers and thinkers in the field of education and poverty. Reasons for our contemporary schooling's inequitable outcomes are examined and critiqued. ...Show more

Persona Non Grata: Breaking the Bond - Fiji and New Zealand 2004-2007 by Michael Green

$37.99 NZD

Available Stock:
10

Category: Politics

This is the account by (the late) Michael Green, NZ High Commissioner in Fiji, of his years and role in Fiji until the surprising announcement of his change in diplomatic status to "Persona Non Grata" (unwelcome person) in 2007, a status that prevented any further diplomatic activities or role for him i n that country. On his return to New Zealand Michael Green felt compelled to write an account of his time in these islands with which New Zealand, along with Australia and the United Kingdom, has had very close links and considerable influence over a long period. His tour of duty coincided with internal political shifts in Fiji's politics that would lead to the 2006 military coup that established Commodore Frank Bainimarama as unelected leader/interim president of these Pacific islands - a position he still holds six years on. New Zealand has since this time had to watch events unfold from a distance, having taken the necessary stance of severing diplomatic relations with Fiji. Long-supplied aid, trade, and most importantly the provision of educational expertise - always New Zealand's greatest contribution to those islands - has since ceased, and with the now lengthy incumbency of Frank Bainimarama as Fiji's military and political leader, New Zealand can but look on in the hope that democratic politics will eventually return to Fijian people. ...Show more

For the Record : Lange and the 4th Labour Government by Margaret Clark (ed.)

$34.95 NZD

Available Stock:

Category: Politics

The Fourth Labour Government was an extremely controversial one and David Lange, its intelligent, quick-witted and charismatic leader, has attracted both criticism and accolade for his role and prime-ministership. That NZ today is a more dynamic, varied, exciting and colourful place than in 1984 can in good part be attributed to the Fourth Labour Government, but so can the fact that the country is more socially divided, with greater extremes of wealth and poverty, and an inadequate consensus around social goals. In this book many well-known NZers in the political scene look back and offer their views and memories of Lange and this government. ...Show more
